Berlin airlift june 27, 1948- may 12, 1949
Overview
After WWII Germany was split up by the allies. the United States, Soviet Union,
Britain, and France all had their own part of Germany. The capital of Germany,
Berlin was inside of the Soviet owned part of Germany. During June 1948, the
Russians cut off all highways, canals and railroads, from the western part of
Germany all the way back to Berlin. Making it nearly impossible for Berlin to
obtain goods and foods. This led to the United States, France, and Great
Britain all to deliver supplies to Berlin from the air rather from train or
car. This was known as the Berlin Airlift, and lasted for more than a year
and delivered more than 2.3 tons of cargo into Berlin. During the time of the
Berlin airlift, a plane would land or take off every thirty seconds.
Impact
This is a another cause for the cold war. It's plain and simple that the USSR
had done something drastic by cutting off Berlin. The United States had
perceived it almost as an act of war. Then the airlift seems
to create more tensions than ever, by the U.S. 'invading' Berlin to deliver
the supplies. It almost seems that Russia is testing the U.S.'s patience. Which
clearly has led to more tensions than before between these both ever increasing
super powers. However, It is possible that Russia really just is trying to send
a message. The first drastic act of Russia set the precedent for future endeavors
by the Union.
